AustCycle Training Courses > What will the training consist of?

AustCycle sessions are planned around different competency levels. They are categorised as suitable for complete beginners through to intermediate and experienced riders.

AustCycle Level 1 (Beginner)

Covers basic bike safety principles and bike handling skills in a traffic free environment. It is appropriate for complete beginners and includes a variety of skills and activities to progress riders’ cycling skill and confidence.  Does do not specifically teach road awareness and safety (although some cycling skills relevant to riding on the road and basic traffic rules may be explained).  At completion of the course participants should be able to demonstrate good bicycle control.

AustCycle Level 2 (Intermediate)

Develops road safety skills and traffic awareness. Initially teaches skills in an off-road environment. Riders are then introduced to low traffic environments (e.g. quiet roads or quiet shared pathways) when they are ready. Once they can safely and confidently manage low traffic environments, they may progress to medium traffic environments (e.g. busier roads and busier shared pathways).  At the end of the course participants should be able to demonstrate safe cycling manoeuvres on quiet roads.

AustCycle Level 3 (Advanced)

Focuses on teaching advanced bike handling and traffic skills. Training takes place on real roads in realistic conditions, starting on quiet roads and progressing to busier roads as riders develop skills.  At the end of the course participants can demonstrate safe cycling manoeuvres on busy roads, using complex intersections and road features.
