About Us > Training Packages

AustCycle is designed to teach children, teenagers, adults and older Australians how to ride a bicycle safely and provide people with the necessary knowledge and skills to manage traffic hazards in a road environment.

The objectives of AustCycle programs are:

  • To promote the importance of cycling education
  • To provide a system where Teachers are well trained and clients are assured of receiving a high standard of service and teaching

AustCycle activities are designed to introduce people of all ages to the skills required for a range of cycling disciplines such as road riding, mountain biking, commuting, touring etc.

AustCycle Sessions can be organised for beginner, intermediate or expert riders. The aim is to make lessons fun, exciting and engaging for everyone involved.

AustCycle sessions are planned around different competency levels. They are categorised as suitable for complete beginners through to intermediate and experienced riders.

AustCycle Level 1 (Beginner)
- covers bike safety principles and bike handling skills. It is appropriate for complete beginners and beginning adult cyclists, and 8-12 year old school children. It includes a variety of skills and drills to progress participants’ cycling skill and confidence. These activities are easily adapted to teach novice adult and senior cyclists. Level 1 does not specifically teach road awareness and safety (although this level may explain some control techniques in relation to riding on the road and basic traffic rules).

AustCycle Level 2 (Intermediate)
- develops road safety skills and traffic awareness. It can be delivered to children (generally aged 9 years and older), adults and seniors of intermediate skill. Riders participate in a range of cycling skill sessions and specific traffic safety sessions. Level 2 teaches skills in an off-road environment, to enable participants to ride on-road. Some activities are conducted on quiet roads.

AustCycle Level 3 (Advanced)
- is focussed on teaching advanced bike handling and traffic skills. It can include basic bike mechanics such as repairing a flat tyre. Level 3 training takes place on real roads in realistic conditions, starting on quiet roads and progressing to busier roads as clients develop skills.

AustCycle Level 4 (Specialised skills)
- incorporates a range of specialised units. These will be progressively included in the AustCycle system and may involve multi-disciplinary or discipline-specific coaching sessions, specialised techniques for using bicycles for utility or outdoor recreation purposes, or advanced mechanical competencies. Examples could include cycling training for emergency service personnel, long distance touring etc.

Some points to note about AustCycle teaching are that:

  • The same outcomes for bike control and handling are expected from adults and children however different teaching principles will be involved.
  • Participants progress to learning more advanced skills only after they have achieved the overall outcomes and milestones of the previous level. Teachers are responsible for assessing client competencies and adjusting training sessions to meet individual requirements.

The entry levels, teaching environments and outcomes for AustCycle Levels 1-3 are shown in Table 1 below.

Table 1 - Summary competency levels

Entry Level

Non-traffic/traffic environment

Summary of outcome

Level 1 (Beginner)

Requires mechanically sound bicycle and helmet

Non-traffic

Trainees can demonstrate good bicycle control

Level 2 (Intermediate)

Skills to ride in basic situations

Has demonstrated full control of a bicycle while carrying out all-round observation, signalling and manoeuvring

Some traffic

Trainees can demonstrate safe cycling manoeuvres on quiet roads

Level 3 (Advanced)

Skills to ride in all situations

Has demonstrated the ability to safely undertake simple manoeuvres on roads in simpler traffic conditions. Can identify and respond appropriately to minor hazards, and has shown a good understanding of traffic awareness and road positioning in these simpler traffic conditions

Traffic

Trainees can demonstrate safe cycling manoeuvres on busy roads, using complex intersections and road features
